What Is a NAS and Why Do You Need One?
A NAS is a small dedicated computer with several hard drive bays that connects to your network. Unlike an external hard drive, it stays online 24/7, can be reached by every PC, Mac and phone in your office or home, and protects your data with RAID so one failed drive doesn't mean lost files.
- Offices & SMEs: shared team folders, permissions per user, and automatic backups of staff computers
- CCTV & surveillance: record and store camera footage on a reliable local device
- Creators & photographers: store large photo and video libraries and edit directly over the network
- Homes: your own private cloud for family photos, movies and phone backups, without monthly subscription fees
- Server tasks: run virtual machines and containers on higher-end models
Why Choose QNAP?
QNAP is one of the best-known NAS brands worldwide, and its QTS / QuTS hero operating systems are packed with features out of the box:
- Easy web-based management with an app center for backup, sync, multimedia and security tools
- Snapshots to roll back files after accidental deletion or ransomware
- Remote access from anywhere, plus mobile apps for photos and files
- Wide range of models, from compact Arm-based units to more powerful Intel-based systems with 2.5GbE and NVMe slots
๐ก Important: NAS Is Usually Sold Diskless
Most QNAP NAS models are supplied without hard drives. You buy the NAS enclosure and the drives separately. We can supply NAS-rated drives together with your NAS so everything arrives ready to install.

Choosing the Right RAID Level
RAID combines your drives so your data survives a drive failure. Here is a simple overview:
- RAID 1 (mirror): needs 2 drives; data is copied to both, so one drive can fail. You get the capacity of one drive.
- RAID 5: needs 3 or more drives; survives one drive failure and gives a good balance of space and safety.
- RAID 6: needs 4 or more drives; survives two drive failures, a good choice for important business data.
- RAID 10: needs 4 drives; fast and safe, but only half the total capacity is usable.
- RAID 0: combines drives for speed and capacity but has no protection. One drive failure loses everything.
๐ RAID Is Not a Backup
RAID protects against drive failure, not against deletion, ransomware, fire or theft. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy off-site or in the cloud. QNAP NAS units can run scheduled backups to external drives, another NAS or cloud storage.
Which Hard Drives Should You Use?
Choose drives built for NAS use, such as WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf. They are designed to run 24/7, handle vibration from multiple drives, and usually have better warranty terms than standard desktop drives. Buy drives of the same capacity for the best RAID results, and plan for the usable space after RAID, since RAID 5 and RAID 6 use some capacity for protection.
How Many Bays Do You Need?
- 2 bays: home use, personal backup, small data needs
- 4 bays: small and medium offices, shared folders, backing up several PCs
- 6 bays: larger teams, CCTV storage, media production, data that keeps growing
Tip: it is cheaper to buy a bay too many now than to migrate data to a bigger NAS in two years.
